A Different type of pet portrait

Pet Portrait Charcoal on canvas

Commission an original artwork

Dogs and animals are my world and have been since I can remember. I moved from Bristol to Devon in 2018 to pursue my dream of being a full-time artist, and having a professional studio with my dog Harry.

Since then Harry has sadly passed on, but what I discovered in our time together, was that drawing him was my favourite thing in the world. I’d illustrate him in all kind of situations doing all sort of things such as hot air ballooning, sailing to name a few! I realised I could combine my two loves drawing and animals especially dogs.

The relationship I had with Harry was unlike anything I have ever known and losing him truthfully broke my heart. I am so glad I have so many paintings and drawings that celebrated our relationship. It took me a long time to get back in the studio, once I did I realised I wanted to help capture these feelings and memories for other people.

Many of my clients come to me after losing their pet with only a few photos, none that work particularly well as stand alone pieces. However using all the pictures they do have I am able to make an artwork that they can keep and hang pride of place.

The Method

I work directly on unprimed cotton canvas building up layers of charcoal by washing it into the weave. I then re-draw, adjusting lines and marks, refining and removing any unnecessary information. After leaving each layer to dry I spray set the canvas. The process of staining and painting with charcoal in this way is what makes my portraits different and is unique to me.

“The difference between pets and friends is friends we allow in our company, pets we allow into our solitude"

This process of distilling the image using humble, natural materials and pulling on classical drawing techniques creates a simple but intimate image.

There is velvety softness with this method, like a fond memory telling the story of our tender relationships between us and our pets.

To gift a portrait we can discuss the size and cost prior. I take the deposit in exchange for the gift card and the full amount is then due once I complete to artwork. We can also organise how you would like to supply the reference photographs, whether that be arranging a studio visit with myself and the recipient, or digitally through email. Delivery of the artwork once complete can arranged by courier as per my usual commission process. Please do drop me an email if you have any further questions.
